Marshmallow is a mucilaginous herb that aids the bowels, mucous membranes, lungs and kidneys. It soothes inflamed and irritated tissues and reduces swelling. Marshmallow is used in combination with other kidney herbs to soothe burning urination and inflamed kidneys and to ease the passing of kidney stones. It can ease respiratory congestion and dry coughs. The root counters excess stomach acid, peptic ulceration and gastritis. Marshmallow is also mildly laxative and beneficial for many intestinal problems, including regional for intestinal problems, including regional iletis, colitis, diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome. The leaves treat cystitis and frequent urination. Marshmallow’s demulcent qualities bring relief to dry bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and pleurisy. The lowers are applied to help soothe inflamed skin. The root is used in an ointment for boils and abscesses and in a mouthwash or inflammation.
