Elecampane
Inula helenium
Elecampane is the premier treatment for acute or chronic disorders of the upper respiratory tract. It is gentle enough even for children. As a cough medicine, the herb is demulcent, antitussive and expectorant – a specific for arresting irritable coughing when there is abundant expectoration. The herb also imparts a localized anesthetic influence to the tissues of the throat. As a treatment for upper respiratory tract infection, elecampane exerts a deep-seated antimicrobial influence – an excellent choice for treating viral, fungal or bacterial infections including staph. Elecampane has even been successful in treating tuberculosis. This is also one of the better herbs to use in treatment of humid bronchial asthma and associated shortness of breath. Elecampane is mildly bitter and highly nutritive, helping tonify the respiratory, digestive and urinary organs, assisting restoration of appetite and affording a rapid and complete recovery from illness. It is a useful remedy for the treatment of worms.
