Cascara Sagrada
Rhamnus purshiana
Cascara Sagrada is a remarkable laxative acting on the large intestine and is generally astringent and tonifying to the gastrointestinal tract. The herb is useful for softening the stools in the case of anal fissure, hemorrhoids or postoperative situations. Effects are not usually apparent until at least six hours after the first dosage. Taking the extract before bed usually results in a bowel movement immediately upon waking. Repeated dosage in the first six hours may cause an unintended overdose. Taking the herb in combination with a carminative, such as: anise, fennel, calamus or lemon balm will reduce cramping. It is known for its effectiveness in relieving constipation and for colon cleansing. The bark should be dried for one year before use. The correct dose is the smallest dose necessary to create soft stool
