Blue Vervain
Verbena hastata
Blue vervain is widely used for the relief of mild general anxiety and depressive episodes, as well as nervousness and irritation of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). In addition, Blue vervain has been found to be helpful in relief of mild pain associated with acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, such as arthritis, and neck and shoulder strains. Many references also mention Blue vervain as a remedy for tension headaches and acute migraines. The herb’s bitter nature has been cited as a promoter of digestion and absorption of food, thus being helpful in some gastrointestinal conditions, as well as a general tonic during a period of convalescence. One of Blue Vervain’s properties is to bring about perspiration, consequently lowering fevers during cold and flu infections. If prepared as a poultice, Blue vervain could be used to alleviate muscle soreness and to speed up healing of wounds, burns, and lesions. A strong tea solution can be used externally as sitz bath for treating hemorrhoids.
